Sorry I missed this one John...I put a thanksgiving message up on the day for our USA brothers. But somehow missed this discussion, I had recently seen "The New World". A strange movie on many counts, but it did seem to portray the story of thanksgiving in it....I dont know I may have my wires crossed, but it did seem to be about that.
Westerners during this whole period of conquest and exploration and colonialism, led to the death of many natives from all 4 corners of the globe...such is the nature of conquest. Here in Australia we killed them (Aboriginies) by the thousands, when I say "we", I mean the British, then, in the years that followed, the first generation of white Australians. The Aboriginies in Tasmania were all but wiped out, it is said that just one survived the slaughter. Per capita I would have to say its the closest thing to full genocide of a race of people I have ever read about. Rivaling the attempted slaughter of the Jews in 1939-45 or Pol Pots attempted genocide of the Cambodians in the 70's.
An interesting fact is that the South African government is said to have moulded its first model of Apartheid (responsible for countless horrors, and crimes against humanity), was taken from...you guessed it ...the Australian model of how we handled and treated the Native Australians (Aboriginies) in our country.
I quess what Im trying to say Johnny, is that we all have these blots on our otherwise glorious histories, it doesnt mean that white people today are barbaric now, I think we have learned alot from all we have done wrong in the past and have grown alot since. And like yourself John am proud of all aspects of my country from the Native Australians to our proud history as a Commonwealth Nation.
Happy Thanksgiving United States, God knows we all have plenty to be thankful for.
Dan
