PostSubject: VITAL STATISTICS TWA and sail choice in what TWS   Fri Mar 15, 2013 12:05 pm

Hi all,

I found these geeky tables on ISAF's forum recently, regarding the best sail choice and TWAngles to sail in what TWSpeed. Hope they help and open a few folks eyes to faster sailing Very Happy:D:D...

Apparently in the second table the coloured numbers are not vmg but bs instead.

Also to be noted, I reckon these figures are for flat water sailing, so as such are a tad mis-leading. IPersonally rarely do I sail at 29, I always crack 1 or 2 (degrees;)) off when sailing in chop/waves. Less so in moderate winds 20-30kts, More so in light winds and extreme force 7s.

No one noticed this post or are they all ignoring you affraid ?

These numbers are only relevant in flattish water but they are a good base setting, I would recommend to any one to keep an eye on your VMG and to keep it as high as pos UW and DW it might mean you are sailing a degree or 2 lower or higher than others around you but you are sailing faster.

Im not ignoring you either I looked at it three times. I like it. I must sail low, but it works most of the time as long as Im going the right direction. Thanks for posting that, It makes one think about TWA and how it relates to VMG. If I followed that closer I may do better.

"this space for rent" you're hilarious Pat....hehehe. No not ignoring you Ben, you have to understand that some of us have no idea of the language you are speaking when you talk about this stuff.

Im for want of a better word an "idiot" when it comes to the higher skills of sailing, might I suggest some "pictorial tutorials" for those of us that are "visual" learners?

There is only so much I am capable of learning via text, the rest I learn pictorially. Its just who I am, and Im sure Im not the only one out there that is like it.

Seeing as though the ARC has grown so significantly in membership and also in our ability to host, perhaps it is now time to initiate another resource for our members to tap into. 2 Years ago when I joined my first club (VSK Australia) I noticed they hosted "Training" servers for their newbie members. Perhaps we could start talking about launching this initiative for the ARC in closed server format.

The veteran sailors could litterally talk through some of these aspects as we sail together.....just an idea of course. However I know I for 1 could get far more out of it than I could ever learn by text alone.

Cheers guys Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Dan
